In the run up to Giving Tuesday we are reflecting on the impact of our Tough Times Appeal, which was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The challenges of the last year have been hard for all of us, but for the many Northumbria University students that work to support themselves while they study, being furloughed or without their usual income is particularly worrying. Fortunately, thanks to kind supporters of our Tough Times COVID-19 appeal, we have been able to ease some of these worries.

The appeal raised funds specifically to support our students through these difficult times, from providing equipment such as laptops and homeworking resources to hardship funding to help cover rent and living expenses. Law student Alex,19, received some financial support to help with rent payments while he was furloughed:

“I work 40 hours a week to support myself while I study, and even then money can be tight. Finding myself furloughed due to the pandemic was scary, but the financial support I received helped me to pay my rent until it was possible to return to work.”

We are so pleased to have been able to help students like Alex thanks to the generous response to this campaign but there are still many students who need additional our help. To support our Tough Times appeal and make a difference to these students click here.
