Dr Arnab Basu

Dr Arnab Basu studied at Northumbria University between 1996 and 1999, graduating with a first-class Honours Degree in Engineering.  He is the founding CEO of Kromek Group plc, a leading developer of high-performance radiation detection technologies, headquartered at NETPark in Sedgefield, with operations in the UK, and the USA.

A prominent figure within the business community, Arnab was awarded Ernst and Young UK Entrepreneur of the Year (2009) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Fellow of the Institute of Directors, and Member of the Institute of Engineering Technology. In 2014, he received an MBE for services to regional development and international trade and he received an Honorary Degree from Northumbria University in 2016 for his contribution to engineering and business. He has maintained his connection with the University since graduating, speaking at events, contributing to webpages and publications and, more recently, funding an undergraduate scholarship.

‘I came to Northumbria as an international student in 1996 and was very fortunate to access a scholarship. I'm a passionate believer that science, technology and, ultimately, innovation will be key in taking this country forward. I am delighted to support a student, to enable them to access a university education and make a difference in the world going forward. For young people coming into science and technology today, the opportunities are endless. The University has had a big impact on my life and where I am today, and I look forward to continuing our relationship going forward.’
