Dr Gabriel Cucato

Assistant Professor

Department: Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation

I began my academic career in Londrina, Parana, Brazil, in physical education undergraduate course (2003-2007). Then I moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I stayed two years as an intern for Dr Raphael Mendes Ritti-Dias, conducting research on the effects of resistance training on patients with peripheral artery disease and their quality of life at the University of Sao Paulo (2007-2009). I started my doctoral studies under Dr Claudia Forjaz's supervision in 2009. As part of my PhD project, I investigated the acute effects of walking training on cardiovascular function in patients with peripheral artery disease. As soon as I completed my PhD (2009-2013), I got a postdoctoral position at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I led a multidisciplinary team to run clinical trials and epidemiology studies with medical doctors, physiotherapists, and psychologists. My next career move was to become an associate researcher at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein (2017-2019), where I won two Brazilian grants (FAPESP and CNPq), and subsequently began working at Universidade Ibirapuera (2017-2019). In 2019, I began a new job as Vice Chancellor Senior Research Fellow at Northumbria University.

I have been a principal investigator in studies evaluating how exercise/physical activity impact cardiovascular function in patients with chronic disease (especially in peripheral artery disease patients). I have also experience leading and conducting multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention, clinical trials and epidemiological trials. Additional areas of interest include psychological outcomes (perceived exertion of exercise), metabolic syndrome, cancer, physical fitness, cerebral function and preoperative exercise聽therapy.聽
