“I can’t think of a better time to take up a distance learning programme” – that’s what Chandula Bandara thinks about starting a new learning experience as an international student during the Covid19 pandemic. Read on to find out more about how he’s juggling his full-time job in the UAE with studying online with Northumbria University.
Why did you choose to study with Northumbria University and what were the challenges?
As a distance-learning student, my options were endless. I wanted to join a UK university, and Northumbria University's course stood out from the other options that I had.
The areas covered throughout the course are well balanced, and I was able to gain a lot of knowledge in each step that I took. One of the challenges I had was that my exposure to academic higher education is very minimal, so I learned multiple things even from the basics.
Why did you choose to study via distance learning over studying on campus?
I wasn't satisfied with the options that I found here locally in the UAE. At the same time, I was not in a position to move to a different country to study either; that's when I looked at distance- learning options.
In terms of support, what has helped to make the experience easier?
I find the module tutors to be very supportive and the student advisors are always there for you. These experiences make Northumbria University a very welcoming place to do your higher education.
What would you say has been the biggest benefit, so far, to studying this course? Has it helped you in your day-to-day role?
I have been able to apply multiple things that I've learned over the duration of the course so far at my current organisation. I've experienced positive effects, and I've gained recognition for my contributions.
What difference do you think this degree is going to make to your career, or your life, in the long term?
This Masters is one of the critical things that I think will really help me grow my career. I am in the pursuit of climbing up the ladder in my field, and I'm sure this puts me in the spotlight among other candidates. I intend to pursue a career in Higher Education in the long run, so I also see this as the foundation for an academic career.
What advice would you give someone considering studying a distance-learning course with NU?
As I mentioned earlier, I can't think of a better time to take up a distance-learning programme due to the pandemic and I highly recommend Northumbria University for that.
How would you describe your NU experience so far in three words?
Exciting, Warm, Delightful
